An extension and new interpretation of the beloved studio townhouses in Utterslev Mose. A place where the artists personal work is in focus and therefore the center of activity in the building.

Date: 2015
Type: Housing
Site: Utterslev Mose, Copenhagen, Denmark

The assignment request an extension to the popular, already existing studio townhouses called "Atelierhusene" located in Utterslev Mose (northwestern Copenhagen). Atelierhusene where drawn by architect Viggo Møller Jensen and completed in the early 1940s.

The aim with this project where to make a natural extension to Atelierhusene and tackle the problems which they face today. Because of their popularity getting a lease is xtremely difficult which drives the age of the

residents up making it almost impossible for younger tendents to become a part of the collective. To work around this problem the project proposes smaller townhouses which are suited for one or two residents. They are meant to be short term leases so a greater variation of artists can live and experience Atelierhusene. The new row uses the same amount of units as the others and adopts the thought of using inexpensive materials among other things. But what makes it really differ from the other rows are the way you move around inside each unit.

The studio is not a separate room or part of the house, here their the central core of the building. All movement takes place in or around the studio so that the artist is in constant contact with their work and can access the space from a variation of angles. The studio is also a much more flexible space, it facilitates a variation of light settings and can be extended from the central core out to the living room or garden depending on the space required.
